I was one of the first Esurance customers back in 1998. My policy number was PACA000001553. Yeah, the 1553rd customer in California.
I had them until late 2003, when I got a letter announcing they were severing ties with their carrier, and setting up their own deal. My new insurance rates would have doubled under the new arrangement, so I switched companies to AmEx.
In the five-ish years I had them, they were fantastic. I never had any claims, but in 2000 when I bought my Alfa they really went the extra mile to get things together. The hand-wrote a binder to cover me while I drove the car from New Jersey to California, before I'd even registered it, and were always prompt with call-backs during the at-times painful purchase process. They kept in touch with my bank to be sure everything was ready for the purchase, even called when I got back to be sure I'd made it okay(!). I was really sad to have to trade them in, and wouldn't have had the price difference not been so substantial.
I'm not sure what happened, but recently it seems they've re-evaluated their rates and I can again save money by using them. As soon as my policy is up with AmEx, I will be going back. Hopefully, I can get my old policy number back. It was cool talking to them on the phone and hearing, "Jeez, you've been with us since the beginning!"
