There's a company in my area that doesn't hire smokers. I heard a conversation with the owner, and when they instituted the hiring policy, all smokers who currently worked there were allowed to stay (i.e. no one lost their job because of it). "Do you smoke?" became an interview question.
There seems to be two conflicting groups trying to keep their freedoms.
Companies are trying to hire people that allow them to turn a larger profit by keeping their costs down.
Individuals are trying to keep their private lives out of the land of regulation.
Not sure where the happy medium is on this, but smokers CANNOT be compared to race, gender, and other groups that have had to fight for fairness. I am a bit nervous that this is where we are going.
And I agree, smokers should be the ones that cover the increased health care costs. They already do something similar in PA (and NY?) by paying the increased cigarette taxes ...
In PA, it seems to be, let the vices pay for everything! We have cigarette taxes, state-regulated liquor stores (such a bad idea, but that's another post), and now ... gambling!!
Sorry about the rant (I should just move so I stop complaining).
