But it takes some practice, would be good to have someone show you the ropes, and will require purchace of some tools and materials. Not as bad as flytying which requires a pretty significant investement, but time and money nonetheless.
I got the impression that tturbo was a bit short on both. Families....
If you want to give it a try, look at http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/Content.aspx?src=home.htm . They have a pretty broad selection, and are generally helpful. Their prices also seem to be reasonable.
I have not built any rods for 15yrs. The ones I did were very functional ie not pretty. Like my flies. But I've never had a rod come apart, and they fish really well. Can't say that of all the rods I've bought.
For really small streams, I've known some Western flyfishermen that buy 6-7ft spinning rod blanks to build their rods. Takes some trial and error, but once you get a feel for what you like, you can get a fun little rod for very little money.
I think I would still lean toward some of the very reasonably priced rods available at many local flyshops and most of the big box stores too. Sometimes I think you can buy as good or better prebuilt rods for the same money as you put into building your own.
Of course you don't get the satisfaction of fishing your own hand built rod.
