I can't generalize, but I will be honest. I have a 45 min. commute, about 39 miles one way, thru suburban/rural roads and a 4 lane state road. Few traffic lights, maybe 10 total. I've done the commute with a few Saabs and with other cars. After doing this for nearly 20 years, it loses its appeal very quickly, regardless of what you're driving. I could be driving my Maytag Neptune and it'd feel the same. Only books on tape help with the sanity department. As such, it is exremely difficult to 'bond' with one's car so that they enjoy driving. At least for me.
If I had a 3 mile one way commute every day, and only got to take the car out on the highway for long drives (sludge removal :-)), I may think differently. As it is, such driving is a bummer, and when 80% of any activity is a bummer, it's hard to feel good about it.
There are ways to enjoy cars that have nothing to do with driving, btw... Especially if you're an engineer :-)
