On a whim:
The Shins - both discs are great, recommended because of my purchases on Amazon.
The New Pornographers - ditto, both discs great, another on the way, again rec'd by Amazon.
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Methadrone is mostly great, bought after seeing the movie "DiG!" and reading Amazon reviews of their stuff.
The Libertines "Up The Bracket" - probably the most promising yet dysfunctional band since . . . well, I dunno - yet another Amazon rec.
The Wrens "Meadowlands" - rec'd by PitchforkMedia and is truly awesome.
If it weren't for me just taking a chance with Amazon's "you might like" and independent music reviews available on the internets I'd still be listening to the same old stuff (not bad stuff mind you, just a bit stale at this point).
I don't really have any guilty pleasures - if I like it I shout it out to my friends until they're sick of hearing about it. Fortunately for them Uncle Tupelo eventually broke up.
Going to see Gary Louris and Mark Olson (yes, the original Jayhawks duo) tomorrow night at the excellent Variety Playhouse and just can't wait.
Rock on,
John
