True, electric costs vary, and when we built the house prices for gas heat were much better than electricity. Unfortunately, since 2000, natural gas prices have about tripled here, while electric prices have only gone up by 10% or so. Then you get into things like if you have an all-electric house the electric company gives you super discounts so you can come out far ahead of gas heat. I have friends with 3,000 sq ft heat pump houses that pay $150-160 a month for electricity total in the winter these days (with the super saver plans). Similar houses with gas heat are easily double that (electric + gas). Such figures are highly dependent on your utility company.
Energy generation costs are interesting, however. I just did a quick stock check for both Cinergy (electric) and Vectren (gas) and both have had a remarkably similar performance, nearly doubling since 2000 (hmmm). One would have thunk that the electric company would have been buried because of the cost of natural gas and oil, but it ain't so...
In my case, due to the usage patterns of my family, a pair of radiator heaters consuming perhaps $20 a month extra electric have dropped our gas bill by $100 a month. I would not heat a large house exclusively using electric heat, but for supplemental heat it has worked very well.
