The following information is well known so others with even more knowledge of history are welcomed to add information.
The first SAAB was a 92. It was project 92. Had SAAB designed other projects before the car, the first SAAB might have been the SAAB 104.
Afterwards, the numbers simply got higher, e.g. 93, 96, 99. When the 99 was improved with a larger engine compartment, among many other new areas of design, it was called the 900. (The Sonett didn't have a "9")
The 900 was constantly improved. Now I am concerned that cars are not improved too much. It's possible for a company to sell a poor design and not change it until a new model is built. On the other hand, it is possible to introduce improvements the following model year.
9000 was next. 90000 is too weird so it was named the 9-5. That started the 9-something nomenclature.
