Hi Mike,
I know what you mean when Aero gets better MPG than Linear. But that comparison is apples to oranges, because of different cam set-up and ECU programming and other inherent system differences between the two cars. I also noticed that my friend's Viggen get better gas mileage then his girlfriends 9-3 SE. I think you will also find differing 'testimonies' on whether 87 or 93 gets better gas mileage. Again, the 'fun' factor has a lot to do with gas mileage. 87 grade will difinitely get you worse mileage and will not give you more power during spirited driving. But in my situation, where I'm setting my cruise at 75mph and driving for 30 minutes, I will be willing to bet that my cost per mile is lower in 87 grade than 93 grade. In fact, I get absolutely NO difference in gas mileage between 87 and 93 grade. Sometimes one will get more than the other, vice versa, depending on which brand gas I use and how much city driving and 'fun' driving was part of that gas fill up.
My MPG average on my '95 Aero with 48k miles is right around 24 - 25 mpg. That's about 25% city and 75% highway (time-wise).
In the end, it's my money and your money. You go with what you know and feel is best value or bang for the buck. For me, 87 does fine. In fact, 87 gas from Flying J plaza next to work seems to get the best mileage for some reason. Bottom line, individuals will buy what each feels will get the best bang for the buck. But I think as higher the gas prices, more and more will think twice about filling up with premium. That is the point for this discussion thread.
