First, changing out a gallon of oil a few dozen times than "necessary" over the life of the car hardly constitutes a waste of resources. Our cars guzzle more oil (gasoline) in a week's worth of driving than they have in their sumps. Sorry, I just think it's silly to talk about the environmental impact of a few quarts here and there when these things use gas by the gallon.
Second, R&T puts a whole lot of caveats in. Everything's got to be sealed up tight, no contamination, no oil burning, nothing. Heck, just checking the oil level regularly to make sure it's up to snuff is a tricky proposition on the 9-5, with it's worst-design-in-history dipstick. And what happens if you do have coolant, moisture, or fuel somehow getting into the oil?
Perhaps if they had an actual oil life monitor, that sampled the oil to make sure it was still in good shape, along with an oil level monitor to make sure you had enough, I'd buy the 15k service interval.
'Till then, I'll stick with my DIY $21 Mobil 1 changes every 5k. A small price to pay for insurance against all the problems I described earlier.
