OT: Dealer offer to buy out lease? How does this work?

I know that this is a common sales tactic, and that there must be something in it for the dealer beyond what I understand, so I'm asking for your thoughts (especially Mike Lynch - the most requested man on these forums it seems!).
My girlfriend is leasing a 2002 Audi A4 1.8t, tiptronic, sport & winter packages, all the bells & whistles, 18,000 miles. She barely drives it, as evidenced by the miles.
Her lease payment is $500/month and has 17 payments remaining (total of $8,500). Buyout at the end of the lease is $14,000.
She has received many mailings from the dealership she purchased it from, saying they "want to buy out her lease." Part of this is that (I assume) they set her up with another vehicle in their inventory (not sure if it is ANY car - new OR used?).
Neither of us really understands how this offer works; obviously it is a sales pitch of some kind but we're wondering what benefit there is to the consumer by offering this "deal." She has always had a twinge of buyer's remorse on this Audi and is looking for a way out, preferably into a cheaper car she can OWN, not lease.
Anyone care to enlighten me on how this works? Worth it? How does the customer make the most of this opportunity?
