I do think that the current speed limits are pretty far below where they belong. Take the thruway between Albany and Buffalo. There is absolutely nothing there, and exits are few and far between. The speed limit of 65 makes no sense, there is not enough traffic on that stretch to warrant it. I believe the state uses it for revenue, knowing that drivers are going to speed in places like that. I got a ticket on there last year driving out to check out SUNY Geneseo. The cop parked behind a bridge across from a construction crew with a street sweeper sweeping the center divide. So while I'm paying attention to the construction crew to make sure I know where they all are, the cop nails me. It's a 5 hour drive in the middle of the day, after getting past Albany there were few cars anywhere. Because of that, I've paid 200 for a ticket + may 7th I get my license suspended for 60 days and then have to pay to get it back. I wasn't driving recklessly at the time I was pulled over, just going fast. They do this all over that part of the thruway; instead of sitting out in the open to get you to slow down they just hide behind mounds and bridges. It is not about safety, its about money. If it was about safety they'd be going after the SUVs that tailgate econoboxes and swerve in and out of traffic.
Bah.
