It has to do with the way geophysicists the continental plates and that is based largely on plate tectonics. India used to be part of Africa (as did Madagascar). I don't know why it's deemed a subcontinent. Size is the logical reason, but I don't know.
Then again, Alaska is the result of pieces of Asia, North America and various chunks of other plates and some island arcs (like the Aleutians) all winding up in the same place, and it only gets to be a state. Same with California. Only part of it is actually the North American Plate. (of course, in due time it will become an archipelago.)
But the divisions are most certainly geological, not racial or cultural. Africa is mostly on one continental plate, or actually a few plates that are moving more or less together. The major exception is in East Africa where the area around the Great Rift Valley is trying desperately to separate itself from Africa and remain part of Southwest Asia, where it belongs.
Europe is made of several plates that formed the Urals when the Asian and the Euro plates crashed into each other. But much of the Alps, though, came from Italy (part of one of the African plates) crashing into a European Plate.
