The W is about 6 - 10 blocks from the Quarter with easy access to the rest of the City. Don't be afraid to walk the Central Business District (where the W is located) but don't walk down any dark alleys after midnight either! There's a little lunch spot down the street from the W... Mother's. Definitely worth a visit and don't let the long line dissuade you. Ditto for a place called Serio's during the work week. Also, in the CBD is the Bon Ton a very old and very good spot for lunch. For fine dining in the CBD try Cobalt, Lemon Grass, 56 Degrees, Veranda, Rest. August, Besh Steakhouse. Heck the list is too long.
Since you'll be with your GF, try Bella Luna in the Quarter; beautiful view of the River and some pretty tasty chow. Another great spot ing th Quarter, and definitely not pretentious is Irene's Cuisine, definitely worth the wait.
Have a great time!
Allen in N.O.
