Thanks for all the advices...much appreciated as always.
Well, to clear the matter a little bit, it was most likely all my MIL's fault. She had merged into a left lane where the Galant was traveling.
Today I saw the estimate and it really didn't look that suspicious. Parts that needs to be replaced were replaced and those that doesn't need to be weren't. And, the estimate was based on non-original parts as well.
And yes, it's strange the estimate really exceeded the car value, but why can't it happen even though it's not a practical thing to do?
The parts alone came out a little more than $2k, but he's willing to settle ASAP with $2k because he has a family to support and can't lose his current job for which he depends on his car.
We're thinking of settling the matter with $2k since she was in another accident last year (not her fault) and the insurance went up. I think this time it will go up way more. (for at least 5 yrs in NY)
Accidents just suck. Drive safely!
