My $0.02
Hey there. I'm a former resident of central Maine now living in exile in MA. UMF, good land grant school. I believe their bread and butter is in education, the actual program not just teaching in general! It's definately a small town type atmosphere, not much life off campus. A good amount of "crunchy" behavior. If she's a skier, Sugurloaf is just up the road. I still consider The Loaf my home mountain, Bubblecuffer! I know that is a big selling point for the outdoorsie types.
I'm encouraged to read that you are considering Canadian schools. My siblings and my fiance attended Canadian universities and had wonderful expiriences. Bishops in Quebec and Dalhousie in Halifax NS. It's my belief that the quality of the education is on par on either side of the border. That being said, the "college expirience" will differ greatly. As you may know, the culture is quite different even though NH and Canada are neighbors. I will suggest that you take this into consideration when pondering the Canadian option, and it's A LOT cheaper!
Example of college life differances? On a Friday night, freshman at UMF will end up at a keg party somewhere off campus getting drunk on watered down beer they drank out of a red plastic cup. In Canada, freshman will end up at a bar getting drunk on a higher quality watered down beer they drank from a pint glass.
