The difference is Marketing!
The 4WD tag has been hanging too long from behemoth trucks laying waste to pristine environments. By extension, it bestows the ability to conquer & subdue nature upon the folks who enjoy slaughtering Bambi & serving him for lunch. What right-minded yuppie (or left-minded hippie) would want their civil, economical, nature-friendly driving machine associated with the 4WD moniker? AWD is refined; socially acceptable, even. Be it manually-engaging your FWD Subaru into 4WD, or automatically viscously-coupling your FWD Vanagon Syncros or Honda Real-Time wagon into AWD, or having a computer monitoring wheel slip & locking/unlocking a clutch on your RWD BMW & turning it into "xDrive", 4WD is AWD. It's all in the presentation.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I hear Table 5 calling my name...
