After you have seen many "salvage title" cars from above and under you have more understanding of why people might shun them or at least not being willing to pay regular price.
Me personally, I don't feel it is right that a car that has received a salvage title should be allowed back on the street again WITHOUT a thourogh inspection of an expert on that brand before and after the repair.
It is soo many reason for a salvage title to be issued and in some of the worst cases I have seen, a 2-3 year old car that was badly smashed up and then barely fixed up by a shoddy repair shop and put back on the street again.
The whole car frame still tweaked and suspension not lining up properly.
If you are interested to purchase a certain car and you know the history of it and why it got totalled (salvage titled) it is nothing stopping you from paying what you feel the car is worth (closer to street value) than salvage title value.
One common practice with badly damaged salvage cars is to take them to an car auction after they have slapped them together, that way the buyer cannot get a chance to test drive the car or have it inspected by a shop that might have seen the shoddy workmanship underneath.
In other good case scenarios, like I think would you have in mind is that, the car is old and have lots of miles and the front end crash that took out the bumper, grill and all head lights brought the repair bill over what the car is worth.
It might not be any structural damage at all to the car, but parts alone is more than the car is worth and therefore the insurance company totals the car.
Those cars might be a good buy for a person that can tinker with it him/herself but nevertheless have received the same salvage title as a frame damage car.
Without knowing the history of the car, a salvage title should be looked at with great care.
