I believe around here the bottom line difference between steel/vinyl and gunnite is the cost, the former being less expensive. Another difference is the ability to do free form with gunnite. As for the construction season, they can dig the hole any time the ground is not frozen. Sometimes they will dig in the late fall, and install the liner in the spring, depending on where the water table is at the time. We have sandy gravel here, I don't know if the material in which the pool is built would make a difference as to which type is better in various parts of the country. Ours actually has a shell made of concrete and vermiculite under the liner. The pool cost itself isn't too bad, it is all the other stuff that adds up, patio surround, fence, landscape, patio furniture, pool toys... Many years ago we never even dreamed of having a pool, but now the pool is our "summer home" and we really enjoy it.
