As a fellow heavier rider I have found flats have been caused by:
1. spoke ends poking through the rim tape. Remove spoke, file down a bit and used better tape. I have not had this often.
2. Snakebites or pinches. Caused by too low a pressure. I used 120lbs on 27x1" (700c-25) sized tires. Problem solved.
3. My most common problem: Valve stems... Most tubes for presta valves seem to now be made with a rubber base where the metal stem is bonded to the tube. These used to have a metal flange, but to be more universal and for narrower rims, manufacturers use the "easier-to-fit more rims" rubber. If the valve hole in the rim is even a tiny bit too large, the high pressure can force the rubber into the gap and it will eventually abrade or pop. Solution: cut a small grommet from a piece of another rubber tube and put it over the base of the stem, or use a piece of polymer rim tape cut to the same shape. Such a grommet should be a very tight fit to the stem.
Also when you put the new tube in, inflate it until it is just soft and massage the tire to remove any creases and pull the valve stem to ensure it is properly seated. Inflate to about 70 pounds and lightly ride on SMOOTH surface, and then inflate to the final pressure. You should solve you problems.
Tip: Carry spare tubes and a good pump. Patches are a waste of time.
