How much will you ride this road bike? How important is it to you? If it's very important, you should get fit at a bike store and get something basic. I use Campagnolo components but Shimano 105 is definitely the value leader.
Here are some value choices for you.
Check out bikesdirect.com and supergo.com They have some nice sales. I assume you know what size you need and know how to build up a bike?
Also, like somebody else said, check out Ebay. Lots of good stuff and used road bikes are certainly more affordable than a new one.
Expect to get a new stem and seat and maybe pedals for whichever bike you choose. Fit on a road bike is more important than a mountain bike but it's really all in the legs anyway.
My comment on frame types;
Carbon. Nice and stiff where you want it and comfortable where you need it. One bad crash can kill the frame but until then this is my favorite.
Steel. Gotta love the ride and feel of these things. They are more durable and fixable but can also rust. Don't look as sexy except to the real diehards out there.
Aluminum. Value leader now. Relatively light and performs well. Rather stiff and full of vibration especially in smaller sizes. Tall people are less affected by aluminum's ride.
Note that I have an old standby steel frame and bought a new sexy carbon frame which I made into a bike. I got he carbon frame after my wife tried to pull the car into the garage with my steel bike on the roof. For the first year I had my carbon bike, I was consistently faster on my steel bike despite the 7lb difference between them. It wasn't until I got the carbon bike adjusted correctly that it's now my bike of choice. This is why I say it's all in the legs and the fit. That's mostly true.
One nice thing about the steel bike is that I was able to fix it after my wife bashed it into our garage roof. All it needed was a new headset and a few tweaks. :)
