Can not sleeping kill you?

Saw an article about some guy in the Far East who played video games for 50 hours then kicked the bucket. They say he had heart failure from exhaustion. But, can a healthy person actually die from a lack of sleep? It seems that sleep isn't very well understood - i mean, we each pass out for 5-6-8 hours a night. If we don't, we feel like crap. But; what does sleep actually do? just slows down your systems? why?
lol probabaly a loaded question. I guess I was just curious that, besides the obvious side effects (attnetion span, coordination, etc.,), if a lack of sleep can implicitly kill you. What if you stayed awake for like 2 weeks somehow.
