We're planning a used 9-5 wagon purchase, and since there are none for sale in our area we have to travel out of state to look at a few. I've been using Carfax (albeit obsessively) to narrow down the list (e.g. anything that's been in an accident is out of the running). But I've looked at so many reports that I find myself getting suspicious of things like 3 or 4 service visits within 3k miles...or no service visits at all...or a car that's been sold fewer than 6 months ago and is for sale again already...etc etc. One car had been purchased at an auction and 3 days later had an extra 3k miles on it! ??

So my question is, should I be using carfax only to ensure that there's nothing seriously amiss (ie salvage title)? Or can I glean more info from it? Why do some cars show lots of service visits and others none? Perhaps it varies by state?

Thanks for any opinions on this one.
