Met Jay Spenchian......Will he make it fly? Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Sat, 20 Aug 2005 12:38:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There was a dealer meeting in L.A. on Thursday where I met Jay Spenchian head of Saab USA for GM. Jay was the architect of the resurgence of Cadillac. The dealers were introduced to Jay's thorough, complete plan for the success of Saab. My take was that this guy really has a handle on what it takes to sell a car and what it will take to sell Saabs. His level of understanding of the marketing, manufacturing, design and business side of the car biz and how it relates to Saab was many, many levels deeper than anything I had heard from the previous presidents of Saab.
After his success at Cadillac, or as Jay said in his words, making Cadillac cool again, I think he will be able gain the backing of GM brass to accomplish this with Saab too. I think that's a critical issue, credibility with GM and that may be Jay's strong point. The owner of Continental, Ziggy, has been with Saab since 1968 and has seen many Saab presidents come and go and it all sounds good, but will Jay be able to make it fly was his concern.
Speaking of flying, Saab's unique aircraft heritage was a major bullet point in his presentation and we saw some previews of that theme.
Mikey likes it! Jay's observations of our current and future product line where brutally honest and right on the mark to me. I think we might have a winner here.
And speaking of cool, Jay probably won't need a 9-5 SportWagon for that.
