Use digital out to bypass some crappy analog circuits

FWIW, I have a Pioneer DVD/CD/MP3 that also handles DVD Audio and SACD. I happen to have an older Rotel pre-amp with 5.1 input (and no digital decoding) so I use a Denon Dolby Digital decoder (which also decodes PCM Audio at 44 and 48 KHz very nicely) for playing DVD's and CD's using the Toslink interface and then run this output into my pre-amp. This Pioneer player handles DVD Audio fairly well but CD play back is marginal (bright and harsh) so it is nice to be able to use the Denon for PCM decoding. Otherwise my old NEC CD player (Dual D/A, 4X oversampling) sounds better than this new Pioneer DVD for CD playback.
Just further confirmation of what others have said, DVD players with CD playback may not offer your best sound, specs or otherwise, though the flexibility is nice.
