I have an old Pentium III 450 PC running Win98SE as a second machine. It is good for period games, surfing and MS Office 2000 Pro. It had developed corrupted TCP/IP networking so I bought a new machine and will relegate it to second line duty. It still works fine with dialup, but cannot use the cable modem due to the networking problem. Fixes short of a re-install have not worked.

Rather than do a reinstall of Win98SE and the endless Windows updates, I was thinking of upgrading to XP Home SP2 so I can share teh cable modem via the router. Any of you running XP Home on that old a machine? I have 512MB memory and 20GB HDD. I do not use it for any music or CD ripping or movies. I assume it will be slow, but will it be slow overall or just take 5 minutes to boot? All the hardware is supported by XP.

I was going to do a Linux install, but so far, only Ubuntu 5.04 appears to work on a LiveCD, the SuSE LiveDVD boots but then shuts down.

So I am asking about the XP for the old P-III soldier. Thanks.
