Neither system works great. I suspect you don't mean actually "free," when it comes to care in the UK. Their taxes are higher, and Americans have a strong anti-tax stance. Having the government pay for everyone's medical care would necessitate higher taxes. I used to be a proponent of this, modeled after the Canadian system. The problem is, if we had government-paid health care for everyone in the US, it would not be modeled after the Canadian system. It would be modeled after Medicare. Medicare's reimbursement to clinics and hospitals is so low that the health insurance from other patients covers the cost. A small clinic like mine is always in danger of going under if they take too many Medicare patients. That, or they dilute their care and run patients through in large numbers, which unfortunately you see quite a bit. I suppose I don't fault clinics for taking this approach, as the alternative is closing the doors.
I do object to such high drug prices, especially in light of all the advertising the drug companies do now. For any commodity you purchase, if it is advertised, your purchase price contains a percentage that basically pays for the company to advertise that product to you. Somehow we never object to that when purchasing a car. But when so many people of limited means depend upon a product for their survival, and especially when drug advertising is, IMHO, so inappropriate, I do object.
