We burnt a CD with a download from Rapsody of a collection of music and somene else had an orginal CD with one of the cuts on it. These were recordings of the same studio session.
The CD has very good vocals and the harmonic structure was very much a wide stereo field (on my modified Kappa 32.5CF's, 2005 9-5 Aero). The drum hits and percussion exibited very good attack and transients. Room ambience and good transient decay detail were excellent.
The downloaded music lost all most all vocal quality. The vocals were flat, unstructured and more like mono or AM radio. Drum hit transient were dead and the cymbals were very brash and reduced to a bunch of noise. The (recording) room transiens were trashed. Overall, a loss of low level detail is obvious. And without that, the phasing details in the stereo sound field are lost.
So the losses of the compression algorithms can really suck on a revealing system. I have never listened to iPOD but from what I have read, it is able to work by using a compression agorithm that is known to reduce quality (aka detail) to some extent.
Anyone have any comments? Does satelite radio loose quality?
