CU data is pretty reliable. Note that they love the 9-5, and recommend it. Also, their used-car data shows the continuous improvement in the 9-3 starting around 1998 through 2002. The reality seems to be that the 9-3SS has been a step backwards with respect to quality/reliability. I drive a 2001 9-3SE, which has been pretty reliable, and my Saab service rep has told me that the OG 9-3s have far fewer problems than the 9-3SS. He mentionned in particular that the 9-3SS has a very complex computer-managed control system that is very prone to failure: if one relay fails, it can lead to a cascade of problems. That is probably what is refelcted in CU's rating of "much worse than average" for electrical systems. The bottom line is that it is well understood how to build cars with excellent reliability (like the Acura TSX). But it requires a strong, company-wide commitment that covers how cars are designed, engineered and manufactured. None of the Europeans seem to have gotten their act together in this regard. Acura and Subaru are two great examples of companies that buld fun, practical, safe, extrememly reliable cars.
