Since I am just out of college too, I am sure others will have a different view point. I am not too familiar with small companies but am curious as to what others say since I am considering working for a small firm.
Large companies tend to have a 3-5 year vest for matching 401K contributions. Your own contributions are yours always by law. Other companies don’t match at all, but give a 401K gift annually whether you contribute or not with the same 3-5 year vesting requirement. I don’t know the base pay, but I can’t imagine it would be worth leaving a job you like for $3K.
Maybe compromise – if you leave before 3 years for whatever reason they owe you the 9% they put in the 401K or in other words they waive the vesting requirement. 2.5 years at 9% is probably worth more than $3K so you stand to gain if you should leave for any reason. Again depending on base pay, 9% for free is not too bad. Although I assume they are not giving you any other form of pension like larger firm might.
