There are a lot of factors that can influence heating costs. It costs about the same to heat my 800 sq ft apartment as it does to heat my girlfriend's 2500 sq ft condo ($200 this month in Chicago). This can be attributed to the fact that her place is brand new and has all sorts of fancy insulation, etc... while mine is a 1910-era unit which was built long before things like double- or triple-pane windows, good insulation, etc.
Too many factors unique to each individuals' use of gas too... you have the right idea though; call the gas company and see what the average usage (not the bill amount, but ***usage***) was for the previous owner. Then get the gas company's current rates and do the math. Obviously your gas costs will be higher in the winter and lower in the summer.
