I do it all the time. I also wash the meat before cooking it and then make sure to cook it till the temps are right.
I also don't get chicken from the grocery store because it's more likely to have nasty enterococcic bacteria all over it, even though most companies give "dressed" chickens a bleach bath.
In my area, there are many local farms that grow poultry in a "free range" fashion, also known as the "chicken tractor" method.
These chickens are purported to be healthier, therefore less likely to have salmonella or 0157:H7.
