The easy way to make hydrogen is using wind power. The electric current is applied to simple water, and it breaks the covalent bond between the molecules to produce H2 and O2. Collect the H2 and use it directly or store it. In the cases that poster H2W is talking about, the constant wind in Kansas is harnessed, H2 produced, and injected into the depleting gas wells in Southwest Kansas. There is already a pipeline in place so you have the following three existing assests that exist only in that location:
1 constant wind (very few days of doldrums)
2 5th largest natural gas field in the world for storage of the hydrogen
3 pipeline already existing to deliver H2 -- same pipeline that takes natural gas to the northeast.
This is a no brainer that will only be halted by the Coal lobby, Nuke lobby, or the fossil fuel lobby. Special interest groups are not special at all -- they are what will prevent the needed conversion to real alternative fuels. Even the E85 thing is disguised as helping farmers -- what a joke -- the royalties that they could get from having generators on their land is far more than what they get for farming. Also, we as taxpayers wouldn't have to subsidize the effort to grow corn, or be fleeced for 42 cents a gallon to the ethanol producers.
