These file sharing sites were marketed for the sole purpose of theft, i.e. obtaining copyrighted material without paying the copyright. Although the peer-to-peer software these companies initially developed has great potential for legal purposes (linking hundreds of pc's into a single low cost "super computer"), they marketed it for a strictly illegal use.
Ever try to purchase a set of lock picks from a reputable source? Even though there are legitimate uses for these tools, you typically need to prove your intent (locksmith certificate or bond) prior to purchase because of the great possibility of abuse.
I agree that e-Bay will likely find themselves on thin ice in the future regarding "accepting" stolen goods, and fradulent sales. I don't know what the solution will be, but it might result in postings by only bonded agents. The appearance of e-Bay "stores" for individuals too computer inept to perform their own listing may be the first step in that direction.
