However, based on my experience and recollection left seemed more common. For example we have had (thinking of family at large) Jeeps and VWs with it on the left front fender and Volvo, MB, SAABs (900, ng900, 9000) with left rear and only car I could immediately think of with it on right was our 99 (on right front along A-pillar) although I knew there were others.
However, I googled for images of some older cars and it looks like right was in fact very common for cars with hood mounted antennas especially from GM and Ford. Although other cars like the BMW 2002 and old Mini as well as Jeep, VW, and others had it on the left. So seems to be a mixed bag and I am not sure what was more common by make although but by number right probably did dominate b/c of GM and Ford. Although for rear mounts I am guessing left is more common.
As far as why I can only guess. I suppose one reason for the right (especially when on the front) on cars is that it might be easier to run it to the radio with less wiring in the way. For portable radios it is probably easier for a right handed person to manipulate it with their right hand (although I wonder if I don't pull it out with my left but postion with right?).
