Yes I realize loons are often found with sky high mercury levels and perhaps it is true they can tolerate and survive with much higher levels than other species. That I just don't know about one way or the other. I haven't had the benefit of really looking into the issue; I am aware just of the general DNR announcements and other general everyday sort of publications. We are lucky enough to have property on a lake and in an area with a fair number of loons so loon articles come up fairly often.
However, one of the concerns I have heard repeated is about the outcome of loon chicks and mercury. The higher the level of mercury in parents the worse the outcome for the young and the more difficultly parents seem to have raising them. There is reportedly a significantly lower birth and survival rate and the survivors don't seem to do as well. In areas so impacted the long term well being of the species could be at risk even if mature birds (and for that matter even young) are more resilent than other species.
