My detail says around 6 or 7 but I am counting the snow tires and fresh summers...everything but gas and insurance, on two 9-5s. They were also both used and are near that 100K hump. I also DIY, but offsetting that, I tend to be overly proactive.
You're right, though, its hard to stomach 2 things at once, and when any car of any make hits that 90-110K mark, you usually get 2 or 3 big items. Plus, the price can be high on some of the cars like Hondas that run the waterpump off the timing belt and have a 90K interval so the whole shebang is done at once.
Throw in a battery or an alternator or an exhaust and you start feeling burned.
Thing is, I know a couple people who pay the entire lump then immediately sell the car on that bad feeling, when there was no indication that it was other than bad timing. Then they get a used car with 50K and repeat the whole thing two years later. Of the cars I've had, Japanese and European, they quiet down again at 110-120K.
When the doors fall off my Aero, then you can have it back!
