I'm not seeing anywhere in the '05 revision of the '04 ACEA oil sequence documentation that says A1/B1 is obsolete. The only reference I find is that the A & B categories have been combined.
Also, the use of "ACEA service A1/A5" as a performance spec is similar to labeling an oil with "API service SM/SL." The intent is to say that the oil meets the minimum requirements for any car needing either an A1 or A5 level of oil quality. This is completely correct, since ANY oil that meets ACEA A5 will surpass the requirements for ACEA A1.
API/ILSAC has always been far behind ACEA's oil standards in terms of oil durability, cleanliness & engine protection. They're doing better now, but I wouldn't rely on them (or GM's LL-025 spec) just yet as the defining measure of protection.
