The Olympus might be nice but Olympus is the weakest player of the bunch and I am not sold on the 4/3 format.
Personally I am very impressed with what I am seeing coming out of the D50. To what extent this is the photographer and to what extent the equipement you never know just from a photo but for the money the D50 seems sweet. The Canon is undoubtedly also competent and people are producing great stuff with it too. However, when I was shopping I was comparing the XT and the D70s (the D50 wasn't out yet) and settled on the D70s in part because there was something about the handling of the XT I didn't like in comparison. If I had the benefit of signifcant real world time maybe I would have made a different choice for all I know.
Both Nikon and Canon are producing good cameras up line so there should be a decent upgrade route with either brand if you are ever inclined. CF still dominates the upper line cameras so that would be nice but memory is cheap enough (and dropping) that I wouldn't worry about it and who knows what the next camera you want might have.
If you don't mind paying even more I'd also consider the D50 body only + 18-200 VR (assuming you can find one available). I haven't used it but seems interesting and well reviewed for a walk around lens to cover that range for a first lens instead of the two you list. Down the road you can add specialized lenses if desired.
