saw comments on the source of gas. smk comments on which companies drill in which parts of the world. I'm going to comment about a tiny part of the US as insight to how the world of oil runs....
Washington State has 5 oil refineries, 4 big ones and 1 small one. They are
BP in Cherry Point near Ferndale (near Canada), biggest refinery: supplies Arco.
ConocoPhilips in Ferndale: supplies 76
Shell Anacortes (north of Seattle): source of Shell
Tesoro Anacortes: supplies Tesoro and others
US Oil in Tacoma (about 1/5 the size of the others): supplies independents
Much (around 74%) of the oil to these refineries come from Alaska. Most/all of them can't handle the heavier oil from other parts of the world so they handle lighter Alaskan oil but the BP refinery has some capacity for heavier, non-Alaskan oil.
Alaskan oil production is down about half from the peak. If ANWR were ever opened, it could supply Washington state refineries.
The refineries supply nearly all (reportedly 89% of WA state and a even higher percentage in Western WA) of Washington state and much (about 70%) of Oregon's needs. Congress butted in and passed a law thanks to a now dead WA senator prohibiting expansion of refineries beyond WA state needs (that tends to limit refinery capacity and can only increase prices).
Chevron is a major retail seller of gasoline. It obviously buys someone else's gas (maybe Tesoro????) but then adds its Techron to it.
There's no pipeline to Western WA so it can't get gasoline from the East Coast and Gulf Coast in a reasonable way. There is a Chevron pipeline to Spokane from Idaho.
So if you buy gasoline in the Seattle area, it's probably from Alaska. It would be even more likely to be so if you buy non-ARCO (BP) gas. Middle East, Mexican, and Venezuelan crude oil probably stays somewhere east of the Rocky Mountains.
Just some trivia that I hope a few enjoy reading. I'm not from Washington state but I once bought gas at a Tesoro station while on vacation.
