I'm in the southern, more developed end. Still lots of woods here (state is 85-90% wooded or undeveloped land) and the town is still mostly semi-rural, although suburbia (groan) is creeping in... time to move!)
There are lots of deer of course, and you can hear coyotes howling some nights and there plenty of fox, fisher cats, etc. There's a big coyote down the road I see from time to time--size of a German Shepherd.
Bears have been knocking over bird feeders and gas grilles here for a couple of years at least. Probably been in my yard, too, but this is the first time I've seen one here.
I have 2 dogs, small and medium size. They bark at everything, even dogs or cats they can't see from inside. But they were oblivious to the bear.
