Ah yes, that particular laser was pretty terrifying, especially when focused down...one slip with the eye protection (even though I did all alignment at about 0.5 watt) and I would have been partly blinded. It would ignite paper and stuff too very easily.
So, green lasers: green is at the peak sensitivity of the eye, so the spot appears brighter than an equivalently powerful red laser. The scattering of light increases as the frequency to the fourth power, and since green is higher frequency light than red it scatters off of dust and water vapor in the air much more than red does. This is why the beam is somewhat visible.
Now, since green light is readily absorbed by the eye it's also more dangerous, so a green laser will probably have a higher laser class than an equivalently powered red laser. Which means you should exercise some caution with them. Remember the saying: "Do not look into laser with remaining eye"
As far as compactness, you're probably looking at buying a solid state Nd:YAG laser, whereas helium-neon gas lasers are commonly sold for inexpensive red. Gas lasers are bulkier and more fragile than solid-state, although you can certainly get red solid-state ones too (and green helium-neons too, for that matter, if you want to shell out $$$). The merits of solid-state vs. gas lasers is getting sort of technical, so I'll stop here...
