holy smokes, Saab got 164 wrong out of a test of 217. That's remarkably disappointing. Saab (or GM) must fix this problem with the vehicles or folks won't buy them again. A good friend bought a 9'3 SS and he loves it when it works. That said, it's been in the shop more than 25-40 times and not for minor stuff. One day the car wouldn't turn off ... he's standing holding the key outside of the car, but the car was running.
I would feel silly asking this particular friend about buying another one... I think he might take a swing at me if I did ask. That said, my wife's 9'5 Aero has been relatively reliable (save for the DI cassette, random oil leaks, check engine light, broken sunroof, etc.).
All cars break, but there's no excusing this kind of performance.
To the poster who mentioned about the 2nd five years and multiple hundreds of thousands of miles later, remember, you're not the target audience for the car. Yeah, it's great to sell a car once every ten years to you, but car manufacturers are looking at sales of cars more frequently. To do that, the first impression becomes important. Back in grad school, I leased a Chrysler Cirrus and on the 8th day I had it, the car stopped moving forward. I knew I was in for trouble and it just went downhill from there. New Saab owners like my friend are suffering the same fate when they get a Saab and end up living at the dealership. It may be a great car that's pretty fun to drive, but if it's always breaking, it is not going to create brand loyalty.
