On some battery packs it is possible to pry them appart and rebuild them. I have done this sucessfully with some Black & Decker and DeWalt packs. Inside, you will often find an odd size NiCad cell that is discribed as a 2/3 C, which is a cell that is the same diameter as a C-cell but only 2/3 the height. Other packs are made up of cells of AA size. Each cell has a tab welded on the top and bottom and the cells are wired in series. Replacement cells have tabs that have to be soldered together.
A NiCad cell is 1.2 V so a 14.4 V pack will have 12 cells in series.
