got my digicam in Nov 2001 and have taken plenty of pictures.
I import with Image Capture (to the pictures folder as a backup) then with iPhoto (using it to erase the card) leting it name the roll and put stuff where it waants to.
Every few months I copy the whole iPhoto library to an external drive, just in case. It no longer fits on a DVD. I have not had to use it or any of the backups, except after an overzealous crusade to liberate disk space.
If you have been monkeying around with folder names inside your user folder, especially ones that iPhoto uses, then yeah, you're gonna have problems.
There might be a big folder somewhere on your machine that has all your photos in it. If you find it, drag it into the iPhoto window and let it do its stuff.
iPhoto (and iTunes, even more so) are really smart and very good at managing huge collections, if you let them do their thing. just back it up to an external drive (or to DVDs) every month or so.
if your stuff is backed up, you'll never need the backup. It's only when it isn't that you do.
