Moving to NYC, Need Apartment: any hints?

Hi All,
We'll, it looks like I'll be moving to NYC starting September 1st (or thereabouts) and I’ll need to find an apartment. From what I can tell, this is going to be a bit of a nightmare!
I’m in LA now, but I have a friend from college who is in New York now that I plan to room with. He is starting to look for places, and I’ll probably head over to help too. We’re young guys (26) and are looking for a two-bedroom in Manhattan (not too picky on exact location) and we’re looking to spend around $3k a month, but that’s pretty flexible too. We’ll check Craig’s List and talk to brokers, but do any New Yorker Saabers have any other hints, leeds, or places to look? I’m trying to avoid as much frustration and expense as possible!
Also, I can’t sell my Saab as I’m far too attached to it, but I realize I won’t need it in the city. I may just put it in long term storage, but are there any “reasonable” parking options in or around the city, e.g. street parking or keeping it in a lot in Jersey or Connecticut? I couldn’t find much searching on the net, so any help here would be appreciated too!
Thanks very much,
Craig
