Sailing clubs and trailerables..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Tue, 5 Sep 2006 13:33:07 In Reply to: OT: Catalina or other sailboats, JG, Mon, 4 Sep 2006 16:18:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
First of all do consider a sailing club. A Catalina 27 is a staple of most sailing clubs and rents to members for $175-275 a day. The Harbor Island Yacht Club here in San Diego harbor at the Cortez Marina has probably 30-40 Catalina 22's, 20 Catalina 27's, and another dozen 28's, 32's and 36's and even a 40'.
My sailing instructor layed it out this way. He has a 25' for which he pays $200 per month for the slip, $200 for the payment and $100 a month in reserve for maintenance, and he used it twice last year.
The sailing club is $36 a month, $200-400 to join, and your monthly $36 is credited towards your rental once a month. So a 22' costs me $20 for the day once a month. And when I wanna' impress people I pony up for a 27', 32' or even a 36'. I'm giddy over how much dough I saved vs having my own boat.
For similar reasons consider a trailerable boat. MacGregor comes to mind.
Catalina 27's are real decent boats with a big boat feel, nice little seats in the corners behind the wheel, a wheel not a tiller, decent head, and all the cruisin' trimmings inside. The Toyota Camry of sailboats.
Lotsa' folks build a decent fiberglass boat in the range and something a little more unique might be a better bargain. Columbias come to mind.
