sideswiped, what to do?

As I was getting into by car this morning I noticed that I had been sideswiped. There is a nice size dent in my driver's side rear door below the molding with a paint streak extending along the length of the door. I'm 90% sure of who the responsible party is. Judging by the paint color left on my car, I think it's a resident of my condo development. Also, I parked next to this car last night. I will take a look at his car tonight to see if there are any other indications.
How do I handle this situation? I would rather not submit a claim to my insurance company if possible. I'm thinking I should document as much as I can and then approach my neighbor with the evidence. It would be nice if this could be resolved in a friendly manner without authorities getting involved. Is this the way to go? Also, what would be the cost of fixing this dent?
Not the way I wanted to start the morning.
Thanks,
Tim
