Aaron,

I think I can help you with a few of your questions. Currently I have a 1998 9000 CSE and a 2001 9-3 Viggen. Both of which are manual transmitions. We have had a 9-5 Waggon in the household at one time also.

9-3 Viggen Vs 9000
As far as millage goes the Viggen wins. Not by a lot but a little I get only 1 to 2 miles per gallan better than I do with the 9000. Personally I like the size car of the 9000. I like the room that it has on the inside and the phisical size of the car on the outside. It feels like a little bigger car than the 9-3 even though the 9-3 is a tad bit longer.

The 9-5 (not my daily driver) did about the same as the other two cars. It got in the low 30's on the highway. (long drives) and is a very confortable car. That being said we had to trade it in because it was costing us to much in maintaince. To be fair we had a 1999 and that was the first year they came out and they had a few problems that year.

As far as the transmitions I believe the 9-3 and 9-5 transmition are better than the 9000 transmitions were. I haven't really heard as many people complain about the tranny's going out.

Engines to stay away from. Stay away from the 6 cylinders.

As far as being the quietest I'd have to say the 9-5 was the best.

The car that I personnally like the best is my 9000. I like the power, size, and the ability to carry stuff. The Viggen would be my second choice because of the ability to carry stuff and not have to large of a car. The 9-5 is quite a bit larger car than what I like.

I purchased the 9000 with 84K on the clock. Most of the problems that you had mentioned haden't happened yet so I've been going through and replacing all the stuff that goes bad on the 9k cars. But that's part of owning a SAAB:).. Hope this helped. Probably not though. It's a tough decision. Kurt.
