Buying a car in another state... inspections?

Hi folks. I'm 85% decided on shopping for another 9000, '96-98. The trouble is, they are getting quite scarce, especially if I want a manual transmission, at least here on the west coast. Yet, they are much more plentiful if I expand my search to the rest of the country. My questions are to those of you who've purchased a car in another state. How do you coordinate a pre-sale inspection with a mechanic? Or do you generally forgo that, and just talk with the owner/seller as much as possible to get a feel for how the car was treated? Do more people tend to just fly out to wherever, with the general assumption they will be buying the vehicle unless it has something dramatically wrong with it?
