In the early 80's, I turned from an idiot to an enlightened one when I took my first trip to Europe. I found the little details in commercial stuff is sometimes different in Europe and even different European countries.
In the early 80's quite a few cars in Europe had them. However, the US versions of the same cars did not. Often, the hole in the fender would be replaced with a decorative name plate or similar. For example, Volvo used a black plastic plate with the words "Volvo", while Jaguar used an oval cat badge. Saab simply didn't stamp the hole. Later, Saab just did all the cars, European and American, the same way with the light.
That old Saab philosophy of doing everything the same way and making it easy to do different versions is fading away. Before, it was easy to upgrade a base 900 into something more, such as adding rear headrests, interior light delay relay, wheels, European H4 lights. Now, sometimes Saab purposely makes it very difficult to do so. For example, you can't add a gas flap lock. They've made it so UK and other 9-3 have it but if you fit the motor to later 2005 (2004 do work), it will not work.
As far as the other post about Mercedes having the ability to keep the right or left rear parking light (and front one) on after turning off the car, I saw that in Germany. People turn on one light if they park on the side of a road and plan to come back in an hour or less. Didn't seem to make sense to me, but I copied them when in Germany.
